FREE CHEVRON BRACE CONNECTION CALCULATOR

SkyCiv Chevron Brace Connection Calculator

This chevron brace connection calculator checks the gusset plate, Schrauben, welds and framing members where two diagonal braces meet on a beam, an AISC 360-16 in ASD oder LRFD.

With one brace in tension and the other in compression, the out-of-balance force goes straight into the beam web and flange. That is what separates chevron bracing from single-diagonal framing: the beam itself has to be checked for the bending and shear the braces induce.

About the Chevron Brace Connection Calculator

The calculator covers V-braced and inverted V-braced configurations, the bracing used in steel framing to resist wind and seismic load.

It works through the limit states across the gusset plate, the fasteners, the welds and the framing members to AISC 360-16, in ASD oder LRFD, and reports a capacity ratio for each. Bolted gusset details and welded brace interfaces are both covered.

What is a Chevron Brace Connection?

It is the joint where two diagonal bracing members meet at a common work point along a horizontal beam. The same arrangement is called a V-brace or an inverted V-brace depending on which way up it sits.

When one diagonal is in tension and the other in compression, vertical and horizontal force components transfer directly into the beam web and flange. Single-diagonal framing does not do this, so a chevron joint needs the beam bending and shear from unbalanced brace forces evaluated as well, particularly after a brace buckles in a seismic event.

What Components Make Up a Chevron Brace Connection?

  • Knotenblech: the central plate tying both diagonals to the beam.
  • Abstützende Mitglieder: the diagonals, typically HSS sections, wide flanges, double angles or channels.
  • Beam member: the horizontal member taking the combined vertical and shear force out of the gusset.
  • Schrauben: high-strength fasteners joining the brace ends or lap plates to the gusset.
  • Schweißnähte: fillet or groove welds fixing the gusset to the beam flange, or attaching HSS braces through slotted ends.
  • Versteifungen: transverse web stiffeners above or below the gusset, where the web would otherwise yield or cripple.

These are checked together rather than one at a time. Force has to move through the whole assembly without the plate buckling locally or a weld failing in shear.

Where are Chevron Brace Connections Commonly Used?

  • High-rise and mid-rise commercial frames where lateral drift has to be controlled.
  • Industrial steel structures, pipe racks and heavy equipment support towers.
  • Seismic braced frames, both CBF and EBF systems, in active seismic zones.
  • Braced bays that need a door or window opening beneath the brace intersection.

That last one is often the reason chevron bracing gets chosen over a single diagonal: the apex leaves usable space below it.

What Types of Chevron Brace Connections Exist?

Geometry and fabrication preference decide the arrangement:

  • Inverted V-bracing: the braces meet at a point on the bottom flange of an overhead beam.
  • Standard V-bracing: the braces meet at a point on the top flange of a lower beam.
  • Direct welded gusset: the gusset is shop-welded to the beam flange, with the braces welded or bolted on site.
  • HSS slotted gusset: tubular brace ends are slotted, slipped over the gusset and secured with longitudinal fillet welds.

Each brings its own governing limit states, Whitmore section yield, block shear and gusset buckling among them, and the calculator checks all of them rather than only the ones that suit the detail.

How to Use the Chevron Brace Connection Calculator

  • Configuration and geometry: choose standard V or inverted V, then set the brace work-point angles and any eccentricity.
  • Mitgliederprofile: the beam section and the brace profiles, such as HSS, W-shape or double angle.
  • Gusset dimensions: Plattendicke, Höhe, width and material yield strength.
  • Befestigungs- und Schweißdetails: Schraubenqualität, Durchmesser, Abstände und Randabstände, plus weld sizes.
  • Bemessungslasten: the axial tension and compression in each brace.

Berechnung, und das AISC 360 limit-state checks run in LRFD or ASD. The output gives utility ratios per check and a calculation report you can keep with the design.

Why Choose SkyCiv’s Chevron Brace Connection Calculator?

Gusset design has a lot of limit states and they interact. Whitmore width, Blockschere, Bolzenlager, compressive gusset buckling and weld stress distribution all have to be worked, and doing that by hand for each brace angle is slow enough that iterating on the geometry rarely happens.

Running in the browser makes the iteration cheap: change the gusset or the work point, Sehen Sie, welcher Schachzug sich bewegt. The 3D view shows the geometry you have actually specified, and the report carries the working through to client submittal.

Where the braces meet. Standard V-bracing meets at a point on the top flange of a lower beam; inverted V-bracing meets on the bottom flange of an overhead beam.

One diagonal is in tension while the other is in compression, and the difference between them is carried by the beam as bending and shear. It matters most after the compression brace buckles in a seismic event, when the balance is lost entirely.
