FREE BOLT CALCULATOR
SkyCiv Bolt Calculator for Double Angle Connections
This bolt calculator checks a bolted double angle shear connection: cizalla de perno, Llevando, tearout and block shear on both the angles and the beam web, a AISC 360-16 y 360-22.
Two angles straddle the web of the supported beam and bolt to a column flange, alma de columna o viga. The joint carries vertical shear, and nothing has to be welded in the field.
About this Bolt Calculator
The calculator works on bolted double angle connections, where a pair of steel angles fastens the web of a secondary beam to a supporting column flange, column web or girder using high-strength bolts.
It checks bolt shear, cojinete de perno, tearout and the shear limits of the angle material under vertical shear, en TEA o LRFD, a AISC 360-16 y 360-22. Each check returns a utility ratio and the governing limit state.
¿Qué es una conexión de doble ángulo??
A double angle connection is a shear connection. Two steel angles sit on opposite sides of a secondary beam’s web, bolted to the web on one leg and to the supporting member on the other.
Because the load path is through bolts rather than welds, the joint can be assembled and adjusted on site. It transfers vertical shear while staying flexible enough in rotation to keep bending moment out of the supporting column.
What Components Make Up a Bolted Double Angle Connection?
Four parts carry the load:
- viga web: the supported member transferring end shear. Checked for bolt bearing, tearout and web shear strength.
- Double framing angles: a symmetric pair of angles, for example L4x3.5×3/8, straddling the beam web so the force splits evenly between them.
- Pernos de alta resistencia: heavy hex bolts such as ASTM F3125 A325 or A490, in single shear on the outstanding legs and double shear on the web leg.
- Supporting column or girder: the flange or web face the outstanding legs bolt to.
The symmetry matters. A pair of angles keeps the load path balanced about the beam web, which is what keeps eccentric torsion out of the connection.
Where are Bolted Double Angle Connections Commonly Used?
They suit work where the joint has to go together quickly on site and be inspectable afterwards:
- Field-erected steel framing: floor and roof beams can be secured with impact wrenches, so erection does not wait on weather that would stop welding.
- Heavy beam-to-column joints: the symmetric pair of angles keeps the load path balanced about the beam web.
- Industrial platforms and facilities: bolts can be inspected, re-torqued, or removed when a member is replaced.
- Simple shear frame connections: they carry gravity shear while allowing enough rotation to keep moment out of the column.
Key Calculations in the Bolt Calculator
- Bolt shear strength: single shear on the outstanding legs and double shear on the web leg, for thread-included (norte) or thread-excluded (X) shear planes.
- Bolt bearing and tearout: bolt spacing and edge distances, against local crushing or tearout of the angle material and the beam web.
- Angle gross shear yielding and net shear rupture: the shear capacity of the angle leg along the vertical bolt lines.
- Ruptura por cizallamiento del bloque: the combined tension and shear tearout path around the bolt group, on the angles and on the beam web.
The governing limit state is often not the bolts themselves. Bearing or block shear in thinner angle material regularly controls, which is why all four are checked together rather than in isolation.
How to Use this Bolt Calculator
- Select the design method: LRFD o TEA, to match the project specification.
- Define the member profiles: AISC W-shapes, channels and L-angles for the supported and supporting members.
- Enter the bolt details: grade such as A325 or A490, diámetro, tipo de agujero (standard or slotted), and bolt pitch and edge distances.
- Enter the design load: the applied vertical shear, factored or allowable to suit the method.
- CALCULAR.
The output gives a utility ratio per check, the governing limit state, and the step-by-step working behind each number.
Why Choose SkyCiv’s Double Angle Bolt Calculator?
Multi-bolt shear means a lot of limit states, and the one that governs is not obvious before you run the numbers. The calculator does the AISC 360 spacing checks along with bolt shear, Llevando, tearout and block shear, and shows which one controls.
Se ejecuta en el navegador., and the working is shown rather than hidden, so a check can go into the design file as it stands.
