Steel Angle Section Capacity Calculator
The SkyCiv Steel Angle Section Capacity Calculator is a free tool that allows engineers to design steel angle members for use in structures. The steel angle design tool provides results for axial, flexural, tensile, buckling, shear, tension, compression, and combined forces in angle members. A database of common angle sections and their related properties is provided. Custom angle sections can also be solved.
Angle sections can be designed according to the following design codes:
- American Standard - AISC 360-22 (Metric and Imperial Units)
- Australian Standard - AS 4100:2020 (Metric Units Only)
- New Zealand Standard - NZS 3404:1997 (Metric Units Only)
The angle section capacity calculator is part of the SkyCiv Quick Design Module.
About the Angle Beam Capacity Calculator
What are Steel Angle Sections?
Angle sections are hot rolled structural steel sections, formed in an “L” shape, consisting of a vertical and horizontal leg.
Where are Angles Sections Commonly Used?
Angle sections are commonly used as structural bracing members, lintel beams for supporting brickwork openings, or as components in a lattice steel structures. Angles can also be connected back-to-back to improve their buckling resistance.
Angles generally have poor performance in compression and bending due to their low sectional stiffness. However, angles perform well in tension and are easy to install/handle due to their low weight (in comparison to I-Sections).
Steel Angle Section Design Considerations
Angle sections are asymmetric about their geometric Z and Y axes. This means that the principal major and minor axis do not align with the geometric axes. Most steel design codes require members to be designed about their principal axes for bending and compression, meaning geometric design forces need to be converted into the relevant principal axes directions. Shear design checks are generally carried out about a section’s geometric axes. This conversion is handled automatically in the SkyCiv Steel Angle Design Module.

SkyCiv Steel Angle Design Module
The SkyCiv Angle Design Module supports the design of standard and Custom angle sections to AISC 360-22 and AS 4100-2020. The module supports design for Major Axis Flexure, Minor Axis Flexure, Axial Compression/Tension and Major/Minor Shear Force, including combined actions checks.
Users can specify buckling lengths for flexure and compression buckling, including specification of effective length factors. Results are presented in a clean, table based format with relevant references to the Design Code.
The AISC 360-22 version of the module supports Allowable Stress Design (ASD) and Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) design, with metric and imperial unit reporting.
