Directly Welded

The directly welded moment connection is the weakest connection amongst all the connection but it is also the most commonly used of the moment connections in light weight frames.

Directly welded HSS to W moment connection

Design

A double WT connection is considered to be one of the cheaper alternatives to the Through Plate Connection and Collared Plate Connection as it only requires extra bolting or welding for the WT sections to the HSS column.

Best Practices

  • The double WT connection can be prone to high prying loads on the welds of the HSS column, therefore it is better to over design the welds use.
  • The depth of the WT flange should not be wider than the flange of the child member.
  • The web flange of the WT shape should not extend too long to prevent a higher moment load acting on the welds.
